Marathon
The fact that Marathon men's watches have been officially cooperating with the armed forces of the United States and NATO countries since the mid-20th century proves that they are among the best. Now everyone can afford military quality.
Brand History
The history of the Marathon trademark began in 1904, but then it was called Weinsturm Watch, and was later renamed Wein Brothers. In 1939, the brand was registered in Montreal and received its current name. In 1941, the company began producing watches for the Allied forces. And to this day, Marathon produces accessories for the military. Now chronometers are manufactured in factories in Switzerland, Canada, and the USA.
Rulers
Marathon wristwatches combine military precision and reliability, Swiss quality and meticulous attention to detail. All models are divided into two lines: military and diving.
Divers
The first waterproof men's SAR (Search And Rescue) watch was created for Canadian Navy divers. The accessories turned out to be so practical and convenient that the US Marine Corps also decided to equip their rescuers with them.
Currently, the GSAR (Government Search and Rescue) line includes several models: Medium GSAR, TSAR, JDD, etc. They differ from each other in characteristics and functions. All versions except TSAR are equipped with a mechanical ETA caliber.
Products for divers and snorkelers (except JSAR) are available with tritium backlighting. It provides better visibility than luminescent coating. JSAR uses MaraGlo photoluminescent paint for dial readability in the dark, which requires charging from an external light source.
Pilots
The first Marathon Navigator was released in 1986 for the US Air Force. They are still issued to military pilots and paratroopers. Inside the stainless steel or shockproof fibershell case is a Swiss quartz movement ETA or automatic Sellita. Fibershell is a strong and lightweight composite with reinforced fibers.
The pilot's wristwatch is resistant to extreme temperatures and pressure changes. Tritium backlight, anti-glare glass and matte case provide good readability of the dial in any conditions.
Special projects
Marathon has released several limited collections that differ from other lines not so much in characteristics as in design.
- Jeep x Marathon: the models combine the strength and excellence of both brands.
- Anthracite GSAR: The 2018 line is designed for night special operations.
- Arctic Editions: White dial watches are designed for limited visibility and cold temperatures.
- Maple Leaf Editions: The Canada-themed series features patriotic designs.
- USMC Edition: The main characteristics of the line for the US Marine Corps are accuracy and reliability.
- US Government Editions: US Government accessories meet strict military specifications.
- IDF Duvdevan Editions and IDF YAMAM Editions: developments for the Israeli army are suitable for any special operations.
Mechanisms
Men's watches use the best quartz and mechanical calibers. In most cases, this is the Swiss ETA, but some products also have other mechanisms: the more affordable quartz Ronda, the popular Japanese Seiko, and the high-precision Sellita in premium versions.
Quartz is usually found in field collections, mechanics – in divers and premium accessories. All mechanisms are resistant to loads, have a long service life, and high accuracy.
The most popular models
Speaking about popular models, I would like to highlight the following:
- Marathon WR50m Jeep Willys SSGPM;
- Jumbo Diver Pilot's Automatic Chronograph;
- waterproof Arctic Red Maple Large Diver's Automatic;
- inexpensive Sage Green General Purpose Quartz.
