Americans, Germans, Canadians. Ocean Crawler, Marathon, Circula
Friends, hello everyone, you are on the Feeltime watch channel, with you as always Stanislav, and today I want to show you 3 models in field (military style) from 3 different brands: these are Canadian Marathon, these are American Ocean Crawler, and these are German Circula.
What unites them all?
This is not a mass market watch. These are not the watches you can find in every store.
Ocean Crawler , for example, almost every model is made in small editions. The ones I'll show are made in quantities of 100 watches worldwide.
All of these brands are not cheap, but they are made to a very high standard. And you will see this throughout the review.
Plus, we'll look at the production approach of Canadians, Americans, and Germans.
And let's start with the Canadians Marathon.
Recently, I presented my first review of this brand, for which I became the official dealer in Ukraine.
The Marathon brand is quite old and dates back to 1939. Marathon officially supplies its watches to the military and rescue services of the United States, Canada, and other allied forces.
The brand itself is Canadian, but it manufactures its watches in its own factory in Switzerland.
Unfortunately, the brand is little-known in Ukraine today, like many others, but it has long been fundamentally established in the world.
But we will fix this situation little by little.
I took this little one from the General Purpose collection for a review. In fact, based on its size of only 34 mm, you can say that this watch is unisex.
And we can also say that this is probably one of the most affordable models of the brand.
And the reason for this is that the case is made of plastic and this version is quartz.
But don't underestimate the properties of polycarbonate cases. They are light, comfortable, withstand impacts well, and don't get particularly hot or cold in winter.
And since this is a military watch, all these aspects are very important. As is quartz. Because quartz is simple, more accurate, and less problematic to maintain than mechanics.
So this watch is about practicality.
But there are certain signs by which I can note its good quality.
Because I kept a lot of plastic watches. These are the same budget American Bertucci, these are the same Swiss with American roots Luminox, which is essentially a direct competitor to Marathon.
And I know what relatively cheap plastic watches are and what more expensive ones are.
So you can see here that the quality of the plastic itself is very good.
Attention was paid to nuances here. This includes a matte, metal bezel and a matte stainless steel head to avoid unnecessary glare.
But the back cover is made of pure stainless steel and has a beautiful finish. And in such places they already save money on cheap plastic watches. I don't feel that here.
And the strap is really TOP. Very soft textile, obviously a cool material, because, again, there is something to compare it to.
A cool, convenient, well-thought-out clasp, a very neat, small stainless steel clasp. Everything, as they say, is for people.
And when you put it on your hand, it's like the watch isn't even there.
Very light, neat, with a size of 34 mm, it looks like a full-fledged men's watch.
In general, the dimensions are as follows:
From lug to lug - 41 mm, thickness - 11.5 mm, weight per second 35 grams. Total 35 grams.
My hand is 18 cm in circumference.
The characteristics are excellent:
- This is sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating.
- This is a Swiss quartz ETA High-Torque FØ6
- It is water resistant to 30 meters, which is only enough to wash your hands, but this is the norm for military watches.
- And these are branded tritium tubes on the hands and markers, which do not require energy storage and always glow in the dark for up to 25 years.
By the way, there is a radiation icon on the dial because it is radioactive material, but don't worry. The radiation level is very low and the tritium itself is in sealed flasks.
The watch comes in a cool and convenient tin with a full package of documentation. Including a certificate with a hologram and a serial number that matches the number on the back of the watch. Everything is quite serious and practical.
The cost today is 22,340 UAH.
You can buy it in my online store Feeltime from an official dealer in Ukraine, and the conclusions about the watch will be at the end of the article. Link HERE .
The American microbrand Ocean Crawler has existed since 2017 with a focus on premium quality.
The watches are made in the small town of Roachester (New York) and have certain distinctive features.
Large ones, as Americans usually like, with some unrealistic designs (which is only worth their art models), always in extended configurations (i.e. each model comes with an additional strap), with extreme characteristics, and watches produced in small editions.
Overall, they are perceived as a small and very high-quality atelier that makes things just for you.
I've already said that Ocean Crawler likes to make big watches, but this time the brand owner Christian still heard me, because I've repeatedly asked to make watches for small guys, like me.
And so the first field model Ocean Crawler Field was released in a diameter of 40 mm.
You know, every time you unbox a new Ocean Crawler watch, there's a "Wow" feeling.
In this model, the brand seems to have crossed the classic "turtle" with classic Hamilton-style field watches.
The quality really gives a "Wow" feeling. The finish of the 316l stainless steel case is simply TOP.
They currently cost 42,500 UAH, and not all Swiss watches can please you with such quality workmanship for that kind of money.
The back cover is well made. Overall, there is nothing special here, but there is the same coveted limited edition. In total, let me remind you, 100 copies of each color were released in the world.
Genuine leather belt.
The quality is the same as the case. TOP! It's like suede on the outside, smooth on the inside.
Plus, Ocean Crowler's straps always smell very nice. For me, for example, this is important.
Plus, the watch comes in a cool, very presentable wooden box with an additional Kevlar strap.
Kevlar isn't the most popular material today. It's very strong and is made really well in this model.
The dials also evoke positive feelings.
You may say I'm exaggerating, but I'm just saying what I feel, based on my experience.
This dial is no worse than the same Longines, which can be 3 times more expensive.
All the elements are really elegantly done here. The applied marks, hands, logo. Plus, the finish on everything is top-notch. You can just tell that it's an expensive watch dial.
And the glow in Ocean Crawler is always royal.
Characteristics give the ultimate combo.
- This is sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating.
- This is a Swiss automatic Sellita SW200 with a power reserve of 38 hours,
- and it's 400 meters water resistant, which is a very high figure for a field watch. Unrealistically high.
And they sit on my arm somewhere like this.
By the way, they are 40 mm, but I wouldn't say they feel small.
From lug to lug - 47 mm, thickness - 12 mm, weight - 92 grams.
So it's just WOW for its 42,500 UAH.
There's no point in pulling a cat by one spot.
A watch that looks cool, is made cool, comes with a nice package, is packed with unrealistic features, and is completely made in the USA.
And also a small edition.
You can still buy this baby and its versions in my online store Feeltime from the official dealer in Ukraine. Link HERE.
Well, for the end, I left you with the conservative Germans Circula from the ProTrail collection.
By the way, the brand is old (since 1955) and well-known in the world of watches, but not in Ukraine. Because the MAS market is more famous in our country. As they say, what they give, they eat.
The watches are made in the small town of Pfarrheim in Germany.
Let's take a look at their approach.
The first impressions of the model are very positive.
They look great. They look like a regular watch, but you can see that the design is unique.
The case seems simple, but it's not simple at all. You start looking closely, and there are a lot of edges, some complex transitions, and types of coating.
Plus, at first glance it may seem like it's matte titanium, but it's a special sandblasting treatment that has a hardness of 1200 on the Vickers scale and protects the 316L stainless steel case from light scratching.
I have no questions about the design or the case at all. It looks very nice, feels very high quality.
And the textile belt does not give up its position.
The outer side is made of sand-colored textile, and the inner side is made of genuine leather.
It doesn't smell as nice as Ocean Crawler, but it's made to a high standard. Plus, it has a quick-change system, which is definitely a plus.
I would say the dial is made to suit its price.
I like this style. I especially note how cool the superimposed labels look. I really like the font and the varnished coating. And this is not just varnish, these are blued arrows and labels, which have a specific blue color at different viewing angles, and are not subject to corrosion.
And let's see what a gorgeous light it is.
The dial is not just beautifully made, it is perfectly legible on all levels.
There is both a 12 and 24-hour scale, and there is also a minute scale in the "Railway" type of marking. Cool!
They fit my hand absolutely better than all the watches I showed.
They have a diameter of 40 mm, from lug to lug - 46 mm, thickness - 12 mm, weight - 95 grams.
They fit my hand a little better than the Ocean Crawler because they have shorter lugs!
The fit is perfect!
And what I like about Circula is the great attention to detail.
Here is the same mechanism as in the Ocean Crawler. But not quite the same. This is the Sellita SW200 in the Elabore version. This version is noticeably more accurate. The error is 7-15 seconds per day, plus the mechanism also claims a high degree of anti-magnetism. Only someone who has had a watch magnetized at least once will understand how good it is.
Next is the classic:
Sapphire glass with a really high-quality anti-reflective coating, and 150 meters of water resistance. The head is screwed for better tightness. This is really good for this style.
And today this watch costs 50399 UAH. And it's worth every penny. You can order it HERE .
It looks good, well made with attention to detail. Plus, it's German, what can you say?
You can buy it in my online store Feeltime from an official dealer in Ukraine.
What did we see?
Let's face it, what did I see?
I see a real tool in the Canadian Marathon. Simple, minimalist, but made like an adult watch. It is the point "made like an adult watch" that some well-known brands in this style sometimes lack.
Ocean Crawler looks like the brand wanted to surround its buyer from all sides:
Design, Quality, Package Contents, Features, Limited Edition, Made in the USA, Affordable Price.
Everything is done so coolly that there is nothing to add. Where are the flaws?
But the Germans have Circula in their repertoire.
It seems simple, but until you delve into the details. And only the details distinguish expensive things from inexpensive ones. And to understand these nuances, you need to try on a large number of watches. Unfortunately, you won't learn this from pictures)
And which ones did you like or not?
Write in the comments! I'd be happy to read.
